Ray Charles is the undisputed King of Rhythm and Blues but in honesty I knew very little about him and his work before reviewing this book.
My husband is a lover of music and we have tried to instil this in our children, so when the opportunity arose for us to review Stephane Ollivier and Rémi Courgeon’s book about the life of Ray Charles I thought it would be the perfect way to inspire Dylan.
‘Ray Charles’ is an informative, well written book about a truly inspiring and talented man. Dylan liked the illustrations, which are reminiscent of the work of David Stone Martin, and found that these, along with the photographs and accompanying CD, helped him to get a feel of the era and the style of music. The added CD is a thoughtful and pleasant addition to the book.
Dylan who is, in his own words, ‘a huge fan of heavy metal instead’ enjoyed it but felt it wasn’t a book he would come back to. But I think the book would be a stimulating read for a slightly older child with an interest in Jazz music.
