I came across Pom Pom Gets The Grumps by Sophy Henn earlier in the year when we were struggling with Dylan’s attitude problem. I instantly put it in my shopping basket and prayed that it might be the answer to all those temper tantrums.
Pom Pom, a cute little panda, finds himself waking up on the wrong side of the bed and takes it out on everyone else, sounds familiar right? This book beautifully captures how it feels to wake up grumpy and endure one of those days where nothing is going quite right, whilst reminding us that those emotions run strong in adults and children alike.
I actually found myself relating to some of the scenes a bit too well and it gave me an insight into why Dylan gets frustrated sometimes. He also picked up on some of the similarities between himself and Pom Pom (who also has a little brother named Boo Boo!) which led to a discussion on empathy.
The book is not too wordy and really lets the emotions speak for themselves through the beautiful, contemporary illustrations.
Sophy Henn’s new book Pom Pom the Champion, released this month, is next on my purchasing list. It follows Pom Pom as he is faced with the concept of good sportsmanship, definitely something our newly football crazed Dylan struggles with!
